Cape May Diamonds
At Sunset Beach at Cape May Point you can gather all kinds of stones that wash up from the Delaware Bay. They’ve been worn down to smooth colorful stones by the lapping of the waves against the beach. Some of these stones are called Cap May Diamonds because they become clear or partially clear with some flaws visible. As you see the stones that are partially in the water you notice how shiny they are. Once they dry they become dull and less colorful.
Fear not! You can tumble these stones in a rock tumbler to smooth them down completely. The final stage is to polish them. When done they shine more than when they were wet. The process takes a long time and is not for those who expect instant results. The final polish takes about 10 days to 2 weeks. If you’d like to learn more about tumbling stones from Cape May or anywhere here is a good reference web site for the process.
